We are headed to the RV-Dreams rally in Pahrump NV that starts on Tuesday March 27th. It took us a week to get out of Texas and now we have a week to travel the rest of the way to the rally in Nevada.
This guy made this trailer to haul his golf cart behind his 5th wheel. |

We basically are traveling on I 10 to Phoenix and then 60/93 to Las Vegas and then 160 to Pahrump NV. The trip for the week is just under 700 miles.
While in Deming New Mexico we stayed at the Escapees campground called Dream Catchers RV Park. It’s like all of the other Escapees parks we have stayed at, clean, nice layout, a great place to use as a base camp. It was also very easy to get to as it is just off of I 10 on the east side of Deming.
On our one full day in Deming we decided to play golf at the local country club, Rio Mimbres Country Club. We also did a bit of shopping at the Walmart.
Our next stop was at the Prince of Tucson RV Park in Tucson Arizona. We were originally going to stay at the Tra-Tel Tucson RV Park next to the Prince Of Tucson but they didn’t have a space large enough for us. It seems that most of the parks in this area are still full with snowbirds. We sort of forgot that our park in Texas is still full too; we just left early.
Even the Prince of Tucson was very close to full as we took the only space they had. This is one of the places where they really pack the RVs into very narrow spaces. The sites are long at around 70 feet but just 12 feet wide. They alternate the pull through sites direction of entry so that the RVs can alternate the space for their slides. It actually wasn’t too bad!
We ended up with 2 full days here because Patty got sick while here. That is why we travel the way we do, short distances with a 2 night minimum. That allows us to stay longer in a place if we need to and then make it up with either longer travel or a shorter stay somewhere. Since we were getting close to our destination we will need to make a one night stay our next stop and still be on time for Monday the 26th in Pahrump NV.
This is the same condition Patty got into while we were in Canada last year. She went into DKA Friday evening for a reason that baffles the shit out of me. DKA is a serious condition a diabetic gets when their blood sugars are too high for too long. How high and how long varies with the person but generally over 300 blood sugar of a couple of days. As far as we know her blood sugar was never that high for any length of time so why DKA, we don’t know.
Our first full day in Tucson, Friday the 23rd, we went to the Tucson RV show at the convention center. We wanted to see some bumper pull RVs and we found out that Howard and Linda from RV-Dreams were giving seminars there too! We looked at a bunch of RVs in our weight class but so many were either toy haulers or had bunks in them. We did get an idea of the size RV we are looking at in our weight class of 8,000 lbs. It seems we are in the 28-30 foot size with one slide and they look very doable for us. Nothing there really appealed to us though.
Howard and Linda before they knew we were there. |
Howard and Linda in action. |
After spending an hour or so looking at RVs we headed up to where the seminars were being held to see Howard and Linda in action. It is pretty funny when they asked us why we were there; we told them we were on our way to see them in Pahrump!
After the RV show we went out to Cat Mountain Station. Its sort of a craft mall in the desert. |
For dinner that night we went to a local steak place, Daisy Mae’s Steak House. It was one of the best steaks I have had in a long time. I had the 14 oz. ribeye and Patty the 10 oz. which was way too much for us, so we did our usual and cut them in half and made another meal for us. We also had one beer a piece. This is what we ate so there wasn’t anything out of the ordinary to run up Patty’s blood sugar.
Patty woke up during the night nauseous. That’s how this always starts! By morning she was in bad shape. I went out to a local Walgreens and got some anti-nauseous medication. The thing is we need for Patty to drink fluids so she won’t dehydrate. When I got back with the meds, I went to the office and extended our stay another day. Then I started my insistence that she go to an ER to get treated. We have been through this enough that, at least I know, she won’t get over this on her own. She didn’t want to go.
I made the best of the time for me and did my interval walks (run walk keeping my heart rate between 130 -140). By being there another day I got to walk on the paved trail system they have here in Tucson. It is very nice! Having a trail system like this is a big selling point for me when we settle down in an area. It’s one of the reasons we are looking to the Tampa area instead of our current place in south Texas.

On Sunday the 25th Patty isn’t feeling any better but she wants us to move on. Our next stop will be Wikieup Arizona about 250 miles north-west. Wikieup will be a one night stay before heading the last 200 or so miles to Pahrump NV.
Rest area near Wickenburg AZ. We were the biggest here! |
Our site in Wikieup AZ |
We stayed in Wikiup at the Dazzo’s Country Store and RV Park for just $10! The site was just 30 amp but that was fine for us. This is where the temperature started to change the higher elevation desert type for this time of year. The daytime temperatures are very nice in the 70-80s but at night it went down into the high 30s! It also was very dry at around 15% humidity. This place was just fine for an overnight stay.
On Monday the 26th we head out for Pahrump NV. Patty is still feeling bad so she lays down in the back seat and sleeps most of the way. She has now decided to go to a clinic when we get to Pahrump. Of course I didn’t want a clinic; I wanted a real hospital that could treat her DKA!

The wait at the clinic was 3 hours to be seen! The good thing was that the staff in the clinic were very good and knew what Patty needed, which was surprising. They even worked on her past the closing time of 8pm! They gave her 5 pints of saline and meds for her nausea. She was feeling much better when we left.
The good feeling didn’t last too long! The next morning Patty was having issues again although not as severe. She now decided to go to the local hospital ER and get fixed up.
The hospital here in Pahrump is very small with only 25 beds. This area is growing like crazy and really needs a much larger hospital. We didn’t wait too long to be seen, but the ER was packed. Patty got a bed in the hallway which had a number so we knew this was a permanent sort of thing.
They gave her more fluids and that seemed to fix her for the most part. She still has trouble eating because it hurts when the food goes down toward her stomach. We will see how this goes!
Now off we go to sign up for the RV-Dreams rally! We will be here at the rally until Sunday the 1st of April.
Stay tuned!
