Fishermen’s Wharf and a Cable car Ride

Tuesday:  October 09, 2012

We did just as planned; we slept late, till 8:30!  Our plan for the day was to go into SF and have a late lunch at Fishermen’s Wharf and ride a cable car.  I misread the ferry schedule so we missed the 12:40 ferry and had to wait for the next one at 2:15.  We were already at the terminal at 1:00 so we walked to a cool shopping area about half a mile away to fill some time.

Play ground.

Interesting!
After arrival at the Port of SF we took one of the old trolley cars to Fishermen’s Wharf.  I’m not sure how many of these trolley cars there are but they have I believe the largest running collection of them.  They have ones from all over the world.  The one we rode was an old St. Louis Car PCC car.  It really brought back memories of these cars in the Newark, NJ subway.  This particular car was painted in the Philadelphia subway colors.

As we got off the trolley at Fishermen’s Wharf an entertainer was singing Mrs. Robinson.  It was great!  I had imagined Fishermen’s Wharf a bit differently than this.  I thought it would be just a long pier like the Sana Monica pier in LA.  This is several piers over a mile or so along the bay.  It’s sort of like a permanent carnival and instead of rides it is seafood restaurants.  Lots and lots of seafood restaurants.

Disney Cruise was in town.

Just an interesting shop at Fishermen’s Wharf

We ate at one of the first places we came to, Fog Harbor Fish House.  It had a great view of the bay and Alcatraz.  The food was great!  I had a fresh wild caught salmon of course.  Just like the one I had in Santa Rosa, it just melted in my mouth.  Yum!!  Patty had a shrimp Salad that was massive and she just couldn't eat all of it.

We then walked along the bay to where the cable cars were.  We took a cable car on an entire route from Fishermen’s Wharf past China Town and getting off at the last stop, Market Street.  We then walked down Market Street back to the Ferry Terminal at Pier 1.  It was now 7:30 pm and the next ferry back was at 8:10 so we bought some cookies and had a little desert while sitting waiting on the ferry.

Sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Cable cars taking on passengers.  This is an end of the line so there is a manual tur table.

Another great day!

Tomorrow we will take an Alcatraz tour and then do a dinner/dance cruise. That will end our SF exploring.

Stay tuned!
